About our Trip
Lesotho- here we come!
Out of our team of 29, ten of us will be leaving for Lesotho early on December 8th. The early group consists mostly of the teens, who are going early to start their work sooner than the rest of us. The remaining 19 team members leave for Lesotho on December 28th. The entire group will be together for two weeks. We all come back to the states on January 12th.
While we’re there, we’ll be working at two orphanages in Lesotho. One has 24 children, the other has 36. A large majority of the kids, if not all, are HIV orphans. With the country so affected by the devastating virus, there are many orphans who are left on their own, and many of them also have the added complexity of having to deal with the disease themselves.
We are hoping to arrive in the country with quite a bit of money raised through our many fundraisers (see the Fundraising page for more info). This money will be used to buy beds, which many of the kids are lacking. The money will also be used to buy other essentials, including wash clothes, towels, kitchen utensils, pots and pans– anything we can find that they need. We are looking into the possibility of helping to fund and/or help build a roof for one of the orphanages. Currently, it is open to the sky. With their climate very similar to ours here in Idaho, we see the need for the roof and are hoping to fulfill that need.
Our team will be splitting up most days to work on different projects- one of them including loving on the kids! Other teams will be doing physical labor at the sites. And there is a possibility of a prayer team- traveling into the city to walk and pray for the people. The teams may be switching responsibilities over the two weeks– those specifics are not ironed out quite yet.
And although we can make plans to do certain things and help out in specific ways, as all mission trips go, we must be flexible. Something about Africa demands this of mission teams to the extreme. We are meeting regularly to practice repeating to ourselves our new motto: “Be flexible. Be flexible. Be flexible.”
We appreciate your interest and prayers for our trip! We will continue to update this page as details are available to us.
